STEPHANIE⌁CASTONGUAY

Stephanie Castonguay est une artiste sonore, bidouilleuse d’instruments DIY et performeuse en musique expérimentale basée à Tiohtià:ke/Montréal // Stephanie Castonguay is a sound artist, DIY instrument thinkerer, and experimental music performer based in Tiohtià:ke/Montreal

Driven by an insatiable curiosity for experimentation, Stephanie Castonguay combines her DIY ethos with the fluid and porous boundaries between sound art, electronic media, and bioart. Guided by an ecofeminist spirit, she advocates a “hands-on” approach rooted in non-expertise, repurposing obsolete technologies to reveal unexpected sonic delights. Thus, homemade circuits, bio-composite discs, modified turntables, and recycled digitizer heads become her tools of choice. These devices translate materiality into a decomposing graphic notation, linking the analog intelligence of touch to our consciousness and our intimate connection with nature. Her fragile creations transform impermanence into an active force, endowed with its own agency, where matter is never controlled but rather encountered

In contemporary dance, Castonguay collaborates with Olivier Landry-Gagnon on La disparition des choses (2022) and La trajectoire des ondes (in progress), two pieces by choreographer Amélie Rajotte. In experimental film, she is behind the sound design and composition for the short films Elles s’élèvent ces forteresses éponges (2022) and Le mirage des mains ultra réalistes (2024), by Guillaume Vallée, while also co-directing her own films: Sentient Beings (2021), Enter the End (2025) with Sonya Stefan, and don’t relax yet ;) (2025) with Charline Dally.
