Purple Mixtape: A Handmade Bioplastic Sleeve and Sonic Exploration

I’m excited to share that my latest Purple Mixtape is now available on Bandcamp!

Limited edition, and I’m down to just 4 cassettes! Two of these are already at La Lumière Collective, so if you’re in the area, you can find them there.

This project combines my love for sound experimentation and sustainable materials, as each cassette comes with a handmade DIY bioplastic sleeve. I crafted the sleeves using a mixture of water, gelatine, glycerol, biodegradable soap for texture, spirulina for color, and, in some cases, additional pigments. Each sleeve is unique, embracing the organic, unpredictable qualities of bioplastic.

One side of the cassette features a track from my latest project, Girl Head, where I took on the role of composer, producer, mixer, and mastering engineer. The second side includes three tracks from Technologies of Consciousness, my ongoing collaboration with Sonya Stefan, recorded during our residency at Avatar for our project Numinous Machines. For these pieces, we used DIY turntables and bio-disc LP records to create experimental soundscapes.

These tracks reflect our deep interest in exploring the materiality of sound through unconventional methods, including remix contributions from talented sound artists Jackie Gallant, Anne-Françoise Jacques, Gabrielle HB, Vivian Li, and myself. The original vinyl records for Numinous Machines were mastered by See You Mastering and produced by Personal Touch.

⚠️ Important note about bioplastic care:
The bioplastic sleeves are organic and can change over time. They may turn yellow or develop mold if stored improperly. To maintain them, clean with vinegar and a cotton tip. If mold persists, composting the sleeve is always an option—except for those containing pigment. Avoid heat and dark, damp places to preserve the material’s integrity.
